The Miramichi area's world renowned status in salmon fishing and hunting, and its natural and unspoiled
beauty, ranks it high in New Brunswick's rapidly growing tourism industry, and adds to its tremendous appeal as a business
location. Major employers in the area include UPM-Kymmene, the local School District, Miramichi Regional Hospital, Atcon Construction,
ICT and Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc.
Industries that have traditionally been strong in this area include forestry,
agricultural, fishing, and mining. While these traditional industries have remained a part of the Miramichi economy,
the region has been quickly growing in stature as a site for manufacturing, pulp & paper, food processing, metal fabrication,
machining, and information technologies.
The key economic sectors in the Miramichi region are primary industries
focused on forests, mining and fishing. In addition, other sectors such as tourism, services, manufacturing and government
are important and somewhat reliant upon the primary industries. The service sector is the largest employer.
Much of the secondary sectors, comprised of manufacturing, tourism, metal
fabrication, construction and information technology, are diversifying the local economy and helping to offset the seasonality
of the primary sectors.
The tertiary sector has grown significantly in the region, particularly
in the retail and personal services areas during the last five years.
